Am I correct that ALL ...Thanks for the revised map. Am I correct that ALL buildings fronting on Broadway are excluded? The 1903 Marseilles? The 1871 Grimm building, the wood-frame saloon on 100th St., where Julian Beck and Judith Malina founded the Living Theater upstairs?

What steps are possible with the City Council? I was at the vote last week, and was very unpersuaded at LPC counsel's explanation of why this modification does not constitute an amendment to the plan, requiring hearings and public comment.

An argument that might resonate with the City Council is that this change has effectively deleted the lower-income residences and mom-and-pop stores from cultural protection, while privileging the wealthy homes on WEA, RSD, and the cross streets. (I write as a coop owner on RSD, if that matters.) This means LPC has become an engine of exactly the destructive market forces that City Council (especially Mark-Vivertio and Brewer) are struggling to prevent.

Historic District status was our best chance to stem the tide of destruction on Broadway (Extel Corp. monstrosities, etc.). The fact that not even the Grimm Building and the Marseilles were seen as worthy of protection exposes the blatant corruptness of the maneuver.

At the vote, I got the STRONG impression that not one of the Commissioners had been given time to consider or review the changes to the plan.

I also got the strong impression that the proposal was in response to private, off-the-record lobbying by big, powerful developers, who do not want to see Broadway protected. The timing was too carefully planned to be accidental. So: no public hearing, no public comment, but private conversations with selected and privileged powers.

I would like information on whom to write to at the City Council - I assume De Blasio, Brewer, Mark-Viverito, Rosenthal, Levine, Stringer, and all the LPC commissioners? Maybe also Letitia James? I would like to sign any public letters LW! or HDC or other groups may be drafting.

I also have a question: one commissioner floated the idea of "studying a plan for Broadway." While this was clearly lip-service, and not likely to go anywhere (since not even 10 blocks on one side of Broadway can get anywhere). But I would like to know his name, as it may be possible for citizens to begin to insist on such a project.

Also, is this an initiative NYC might pursue?
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-06-25/saving-san-francisco-s-landmark-businesses

Yours,
Eve Sinaiko
Eve Sinaikonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8694687286673897473.post-50487076913332626472015-06-24T09:43:45.562-04:002015-06-24T09:43:45.562-04:00I was at the hearing yesterday and am seriously an...I was at the hearing yesterday and am seriously angry about what happened. I plan to write a letter to LPC chair Srinivasan, cc to Letitia James, Scott Stringer, all the commissioners, and Mayor de Blasio.

But I would like to know more about the legality of the maneuver. The LPC's counsel made a vague distinction between what was done ("consulting experts" is what I heard) and amending the proposal, which would have required a public hearing and public comment.

I don't see how this was not an amendment to the proposal, and I wonder if groups like LW! and HDC might be considering legal action.

Thanks,
Eve Sinaiko
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8694687286673897473.post-13569256200749099432015-02-15T15:39:03.520-05:002015-02-15T15:39:03.520-05:00The building, no matter how beautiful it is, is ob...The building, no matter how beautiful it is, is obviously no longer viable as a church. I understand that the first to go were the Circassian walnut pews, so the only place to sit, as of now, is on the floor. Then, someone began taking out bits and pieces of the organ which required some of the display front to be removed.
The place would probably make a wonderful concert venue if the platform were extended out, but there is no parking in the area and it is far removed from the center of things.
If it is a choice between tearing the church down and having a thoughtful condo conversion, which should we choose?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8694687286673897473.post-73650413066228655792014-09-13T09:20:36.758-04:002014-09-13T09:20:36.758-04:00I'm in love with this bench, which I recently ...I'm in love with this bench, which I recently discovered. It is in some ways no different than what is happening to the magnificent Christian Science Church on 96th and CPW bought by a developer who is turning into condos. Though the exterior is landmarked, the interior is not. For a month now they have been removing asbestos and gutting everything on the interior, which should all have been landmarked. But there has not been a single public hearing about this well-loved church, over 100 year old historically significant church- in spite of the fact that the interior very much influences what happens on the exterior. The Landmarks Commission again has evaded the responsibilities they are charged with upholding by not allowing a thorough review by the public-and by not reviewing how condominiums can be built in a nearly windowless building without breaking through the exterior granite-and without removing the John La Farge stained glass windows.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8694687286673897473.post-12937931221786072282014-09-04T10:58:08.709-04:002014-09-04T10:58:08.709-04:00Very informative post sir...Very informative post sir...Betty Bakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14975549452328428149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8694687286673897473.post-38790543441391890652014-08-19T12:16:24.563-04:002014-08-19T12:16:24.563-04:00Thank you, thank you for sending this out.
